Workshop 1 (W1). Web Mapping APIs (focusing on Leaflet and Google Maps)
Organizer: John DeGroote, Director of GeoTREE Center
Description: This workshop will take a brief and relatively broad look at open source (e.g. Leaflet), generally free (Google Maps), and commercial web mapping and geo-visualization API's. The course will give a broad overview of the web mapping APIs and cloud-based GIS landscape outside of ESRI software.

Workshop 2 (W2). Drones in Higher Education
Organizer: James Dietrich, Director of I-LARS
Description: Drones are becoming part of everyday life and the university-level drones are being used for everything from skills-based training to environmental research. This workshop will explore some of the challenges of developing drone-based coursework and research at the university level. Weather permitting, there will be an outdoor demonstration of the UNI drone fleet.

Field Trip 1 (F1). Local Responses to Flooding
Organizer: Dave May, Professor of Geography
Description: Dry Run Creek in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, Iowa have been the focus of some of the earliest flood mitigation efforts. This field trip will examine the history of multiple flood-detention basins, zoning changes of the much larger Cedar River floodplain, and flood levee and flood wall construction along the Cedar River.

Field Trip 2 (F2). Birding Hartman Reserve
Organizer: Mark Welford, Professor of Geography
Description: We will visit Hartman Reserve Nature Center to look for late migrant bird species and early winter bird species. This is a great way to explore popular birding hotspots in Black Hawk County – one of Prairie Rapids Audubon Society’s six county service areas

Field Trip 3 (F3). Urban Redevelopment and History of Downtown Waterloo

Description: Explore the historical geography of downtown Waterloo leading up to present-day urban redevelopment efforts
